You wouldn't know it by watching the Batman movies they collaborated on, but this smart adaptation of John Grisham's novel proves that director Joel Schumacher and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman have some talent when the right project comes along. Schumacher had previously directed Grisham's The Client, and brought equal craft and intelligence to this story about a young Southern attorney (Matthew McConaughey, in his breakthrough role) who defends a black father (Samuel L. Jackson) after he kills two men who raped his young daughter. Sandra Bullock plays the passionate law student who serves as McConaughey's legal aide and voice of conscience in the racially charged drama. Added to the star power of the lead roles is a fine supporting cast, including Kevin Spacey, Ashley Judd, and Oliver Platt. --Jeff Shannon

One of those stories which is brutal, and sad for a young rape victum. The father takes the law into his own hands and is on trial for murder. The complication is that a black man has murdered two white men in a southern town and a young idealistic lawyer has to defend the black man. Great action, suspense and ending. Matthew McConaughey and Sandra Bullock have a sizzling chemestry through out the whole movie. Samuel L. Jackson portrays the defendent in a tough and sensitive role as a father and man. Have watched this one about 5 to 6 times. Never get tired of it.

This is the best movie based on a John Grisham novel. With excellent performances by Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew McConaughey and Sandra Bullock. Also with Kevin Spacey, Ashley Judd and Donald and Kiefer Sutherland.

This is quite possibly the best movie I have ever seen, and definitely among the best ever made. The subject matter in this movie is kind of clihe (story of a racist Southern jury, blah blah blah) but no other movie portrays it this well. For four dollars, I definitely got my money's worth. Some of the violence is a little unrealistic, but it simply serves as a hyberbole to enhance the themes of the story. I'm a guy who doesn't show much emotion but I nearly cried at the end of the movie. It is one of the most impactive movies I have ever seen.
Also, as a young guy who does not watch very many movies, I was kind of surprised at how attractive Sandra Bullock was in 1996. She was definitely hot back then, haha. :-)

Sandra Bullock, Samuel L Jackson, Matthew McConaughey, Kevin Spacey... this film is packed with awesome actors and a reknown director couldnt really go wrong... and on top of that an amazing story told in a most shocking way is really a must have for any film.
The story is about racism and the southern states, a rape and a murder put the balance of justice to the test, the movie opens for debate whether the sorrowed father should be freed or the law must be followed.
With great pleasure I recommend this movie for any adult or teenager. Children should be advised better although the plot might not interest them there are a couple of strong scenes that might mislead them
