Editorial Reviews

As oil prices continue to rise, many people are starting to think about how to unhook from the electricity grid. The Renewable Energy Handbook focuses completely on off-grid, sustainable living and rural energy independence.

Author/engineer William H. Kemp, who is a leading expert in small- and mid-scale renewable energy technologies, designed and built his own off-grid home. The result is a house that has all the standard “middle-class” creature comforts while using less than five times the total fossil-fuel energy of the average North American house.

The Renewable Energy Handbook focuses on the unique requirements of off-grid living and contains chapters on energy conservation; heating and cooling; backup power; domestic water heating; wireless communications; photovoltaic, wind, and microhydro energy generation; battery selection; and inverters.

Since its release in 2003, The Renewable Energy Handbook has been a top-selling technology book and is recognized as the best book in its field.

The book is augmented with hundreds of illustrations, line drawings, photographs, and appendices.

It was given as a gift, so I haven't heard yet but it looked VERY interesting and is what the gift recipient asked for.

A Really Great Primer (2009-01-01)

This author is passionate about the subject matter that he writes about. I personally like people who are passionate about their area of expertise, although authors do walk a fine line between being perceived as overzealous when they make their feelings known. I think this author did a fine job presenting a lot of material that would be of particular importance to persons just beginning to delve into the area of renewable energy.

A very good book with many applications for life here in Southeast Alaska, just off the grid.

I believe most topics covered just scratch the surface of the field. One needs a lot more information from other sources.

If you are looking into various forms of alternative energy, this book covers it all, even a few you may have not thought about. A clear non-engineering discription of each method is provided along with the pros and cons. Diagrams along with examples and photos are provided as well.
This book will act as a valuable tool to both novice and professionals.
A very cost effective investment!
